I am delighted to announce that Dr. Wayne Hilson has enthusiastically accepted our offer to become the Executive Director for the Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives (OADI), effective Monday, July 15, 2019. Wayne connected easily with a wide range of stakeholders who met with him during his campus visit, and the OADI staff are very excited to work under his leadership. I am confident that he will be a terrific fit for our community. Wayne holds a PhD in Higher Education & Student Affairs from Indiana University, an MS in Education from Purdue University, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering, also from Purdue University. It was when he first began his career in industry and volunteered to help undergraduates with their STEM careers that he realized he could have greater impact by dedicating his career to serving diverse student populations in higher education. For the last 14 years, Wayne has been working at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), first as the Director of the Teacher’s Resource Center for Math and Science Education, then the Director of Multicultural Academic Programs, and most recently as Senior Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Prior to that, he served as the assistant director of Minority Engineering programs at Purdue University.
In his role as Executive Director of OADI, Wayne will lead the effort in implementing the strategic priorities that emerged from OADI’s recent self-study, and will work closely with the Executive Director of Academic Success Programs (who oversees the university’s Learning Strategies Center, Prefreshman Summer Program, and the Office of Internal Transfer and Concurrent Degrees) to adopt an evidence-based approach to implementing the priorities of the office of the vice provost for undergraduate education. I am looking forward to partnering with Wayne and leveraging his professional expertise to strengthen OADI’s leadership voice on campus and its collaborative relationships with the undergraduate colleges to ensure that students have equitable access to the opportunities, advising, academic support, mentorship, and vibrant networks they need to thrive at Cornell and beyond.
Wayne and his wife Kendra will relocate to Ithaca in early July. I’d like to thank everyone on the search committee, campus partners, and OADI student participants for their thoughtful feedback and willingness to participate in the interview process.
Please join me in welcoming Wayne to Cornell and Ithaca. Until his Cornell email is activated, Wayne can be contacted at email@example.com
