Academic programs are offered within three locations: the River Campus, which houses Arts, Sciences & Engineering, the Simon Business School, and the Warner School of Education; the Medical Center, which is next to the River Campus and houses the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, and the School of Nursing; and downtown Rochester, home to the Eastman School of Music. The physical proximity works to foster interdisciplinary collaborations across schools. The faculty boasts 16 members of the American Academy of Sciences, 16 members of the National Academy of Medicine, 10 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and six members of the National Academy of Engineering. In University history, seven alumni, four faculty, and one senior research associate have been awarded Nobel Prizes. The University also operates the Memorial Art Gallery, one of the few university-affiliated art museums in the country that also serves as the local community’s civic art museum, and the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, a national research facility recognized for groundbreaking work to understand the interaction of light and matter.

Leadership 

Sarah C. Mangelsdorf became the 11th president of the University of Rochester on July 1, 2019. An experienced academic leader, she has earned wide recognition for developing important strategic initiatives tailored to the goals of each institution and for taking a leading role in building both financial and institutional support for those goals. She is known for her work on issues of academic quality, educational access, and diversity and inclusion at some of the nation’s leading public and private institutions. Before taking the helm at the University of Rochester, Mangelsdorf served as provost at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a professor of psychology who is internationally known for her research on emotional and personality development.

The Simon Business School

Simon was the first business school in the nation to offer STEM designation for any specialty of its MBA. An early leader in pre-professional master’s programs, Simon has built an excellent reputation and strong interest and enrollments in its STEM-designated MS programs in Finance, Business Analytics, Marketing Analytics, and Accountancy. Its undergraduate programs, offered in partnership with the undergraduate College within Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, are among the largest programs on campus. In addition, Simon recently completed a career-focused curricular reform of its MBA program that moved the school to half semester modules and is nearing the completion of $10 million in renovations to its learning environment set on the beautiful University of Rochester campus.

Simon’s renewed focus on outreach, student outcomes, and student satisfaction is driving progress on all fronts. The School recently ranked #29 in the Bloomberg Businessweek’s 2019-20 ranking of US business schools (a jump of 16 spots), and Businessweek ranked the School #4 in the nation in the category of learning. Poets & Quants named Simon “Program of the Year” for 2018 for its innovative STEM-designated MBA program. As the School works to build upon its place among the nation’s most successful business schools, it faces an increasingly competitive marketplace for business education and global changes in the business world.

Simon enrolls approximately 970 students in its full-time, part-time, and executive MBA, MS, and PhD programs. Its faculty consists of 44 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 31 teaching faculty. Simon faculty and alumni are among the most influential scholars in their fields.

Simon MBA students in this year’s entering class hail from 19 countries and represent a broad variety of career stages and ambitions. Most students are already in the midst of promising careers when they enroll at Simon and have the benefit of strong undergraduate foundations.

The Simon Consortium class has grown significantly over the past five years, with the class of 2022 consisting of 35 students – an enrollment figure that has almost doubled since the graduating class of 2018. A few Simon Consortium students are also admitted to Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT), a nonprofit organization that provides additional career and professional development to students from across the country. The Benet CMC has long-standing relationships with the Consortium and MLT to support the career development and placement of our students. 

Simon alumni are managing, leading, and contributing across a wide range of enterprises around the world, with current or recent roles at companies such as Coca-Cola, Citibank, Amazon, Google, McKinsey & Co., Morgan Stanley, L’Oreal, Starbucks, Travelers Insurance, and many other industry leaders. They have founded successful entrepreneurial ventures, led Fortune 500 corporations, and brought to their careers a distinctly Simon/Rochester way of doing business: hands-on, economics-based, global, and interdisciplinary in perspective. Simon has built tremendous momentum in alumni relations and fundraising in recent years. The School raised $96 million in the recent Meliora Challenge campaign, surpassing its goal of $85 million and securing a $20 million gift – the largest single gift commitment in Simon’s history. The School has engaged alumni groups around the globe, and its alumni are passionate advocates of Simon’s focus on analytics and economics.

Leadership

Sevin Yeltekin became the eighth dean of the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School on July 1st, 2020. In her new role, Dean Yeltekin oversees the administrative and academic functions of the school, shapes the school’s vision and priorities, and serves as the leading advocate of its faculty, programs and students to alumni, the business community and other external constituencies.

Dean Yeltekin joined the University of Rochester from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, where she was the Rohet Tolani Distinguished Professor of Economics and senior associate dean of education. In recent years, she has overseen and completed the successful launch of two new specialized master’s programs—Master of Science in Product Management, and Master of Science in Business Analytics. Additionally, she led the business school through its 5-year re-accreditation process, completed the process for MBA and PhD programs to be STEM-designated, and launched a new undergraduate interdisciplinary major, Economics and Politics.

Prior to joining the Tepper School, Yeltekin was a member of the faculty at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. A highly respected macroeconomics scholar, she has served as an associate editor at four journals: Operations Research, Journal of Monetary Economics, Macroeconomic Dynamics, and Quantitative Economics.

Dean Yeltekin holds both a master’s and a PhD degree in economics from Stanford University. She received her bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from Wellesley College.  

 

About the Position

This is a unique opportunity for a high-energy professional with a shared leadership approach to maximize the talents of a high functioning team in creating a vibrant and engaging career services program. In 2018, the career center was named for Jay Benet ’76S (MBA) and Jeanne Benet in recognition of their generous gift and the impact it will have on future generations of Simon students as they pursue their career goals. The Benet Center team moved into a beautifully renovated and welcoming space at the same time.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Full Time MS and MBA Programs, the Assistant Dean oversees a team of 19 staff members. The new Assistant Dean will be charged with providing strategic leadership for the team to carry out strategies, projects, and events in the verticals of career education programs, career advising, recruiting technology, corporate engagement, alumni relations, marketing & communications, and operations. The Assistant Dean fosters a culture of responsiveness, accountability, and support among staff for students’ career needs and initiatives. This leader will bring a facility with data, using it to inform decisions both with the team and about the populations the Benet Career Management Center (Benet CMC) supports.

The Assistant Dean will develop initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of the School in serving the needs of students and recruiters with a thoughtful focus on outcomes and metrics. The incumbent will aspire to be a thought leader in recruiting, with a clear understanding of the current recruiting landscape and ability to accurately predict and prepare for changes. The Assistant Dean must demonstrate a clear focus on stakeholders, proactively managing relationships with current students, employers, alumni, and institutional partners. The position drives the strategy for corporate engagement, which includes overseeing events and resources, employer relationship management, new and existing services to employers, new business development, student support programs and student events that involve recruiting. The Assistant Dean will commit to being accessible to students and companies and engage in the role of being the face of the Benet CMC.

The Assistant Dean will utilize benchmarking and metrics to assess potential scaling of career services balanced with a high-touch counseling and coaching approach. Destinations, outcomes, evaluation, and accountability focused metrics will also be utilized in this position as essential decision making and messaging tools, particularly related to admissions, retention, fundraising, and employer development efforts. 

The Assistant Dean must exhibit collaborative leadership working with both campus and external stakeholders to extend the reach of the Benet CMC and success of Simon students. Partnering with the Simon school faculty and staff is crucial in this role in creating a campus culture that includes career and reaching students through the classroom and Simon community. Collaboration with the University’s Greene Center for Careers & Alumni Connections will also be key to success in developing company recruiting opportunities that span across various programs of interest to recruiters. The Assistant Dean will also actively interact with top level executives of corporations and organizations as well as campus recruiters throughout the world. In addition, he or she will build targeted partnerships with alumni individually and in groups to mobilize these valuable resources for Simon students and to create employment and mentoring opportunities. Our goal is to be a shining example of a business school that attracts, trains, and supports the next generation of global business leaders well-versed in managing diverse and equitable workplaces of their own. The Assistant Dean is a key leader in this effort. The role requires US and international travel.

The Successful Candidate

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to develop and enhance a student-centered metric-driven career development program that serves a diverse student population and identify employment and educational trends to meet the changing needs of employers, students, and alumni. He or she must have experience in developing strategic partnerships through collaborations with faculty and working strategically with corporate partners and diverse University and external constituencies. The successful candidate must be committed to diversity and inclusion in both internal and external practice and messaging.

In addition, the following specialized skills have been consistently identified by various stakeholders at Simon:

  • Strong leadership and supervisory talents to effectively lead the Benet CMC to deliver exceptional programs and services that support the mission and goals of the school.
  • Experience with budget planning and implementation, strong fiscal management and analytical skills.
  • The ability to network, develop relationships, collaborate with industry leaders, key employers, and corporations to expand partnerships that grow career opportunities for students and ensure future success.
  • The ability to analyze data from a wide variety of sources, and prepare presentations related to program effectiveness, outcomes, impact, and implications for future planning.
  • The ability to exercise discretion and apply initiative and independent judgment to address problems and identify opportunities; the ability to resolve actual or potential problems from a broad perspective and discern underlying causes of problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to articulate high-level interpersonal situations and deliver presentations throughout the University, to employers, and the extended campus community.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and successful leadership as a culturally competent professional with broad experience interacting with and supporting the needs of diverse student, alumni and recruiter population.
  • A record of success as an advocate for student concerns.
  • Active participation and leadership in local, regional, and/or national professional organizations. 

The successful candidate will be a strong, outgoing, persuasive, charismatic, and articulate leader known for her/his fair-mindedness, consistency, resourcefulness and creativity in developing and presenting sound and well thought out ideas. He or she must have a commitment to furthering a high level of cooperation between faculty and the Benet CMC, and a willingness to continue to develop Simon’s already strong career services programs.

  • Ability to lead by example and keep senior leadership well informed on matters pertaining to the Benet CMC.

  • High emotional intelligence including the ability to recognize and make full use of the field expertise of staff members within the Benet CMC.
  • Proficiency in developing appropriate and relevant goals and objectives that are clearly linked to the mission of the school and the institution.
  • A proven record of responding promptly both verbally and in writing to issues of the day.
     

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a master’s degree (an MBA is preferred), with substantive involvement of upwards of ten years of leadership and managerial experience within a career management or a career development related role that includes management of professional staff, operational, and budget oversight. Demonstrated success in corporate outreach and in developing and building relationships with business partners; an understanding of leading and managing with clear performance metrics and goals; a desire to work with students in a meaningful way to develop lifelong career competencies; experience working with both diverse and international students and employers; and the ability to collaborate and partner with Simon School and University stakeholders, both internal and external.
